Eureka Nursery

Eureka

Eureka 'A Place For Discovery'
(Full day childcare: 0-5 years)

Eureka Nursery is a full day care setting in the heart of Willenhall, we are based in the Willenhall Education, Employment and Training centre. At Eureka we cater for children from 6 weeks to 4 years in four separate rooms. We are a large setting which offers a variety of sessions for children to attend. These include full day sessions for parents that are working or training and 2,3 and 4 year old funded places for children who may be accessing their 15hrs free childcare. Our operational opening times are 8-5.30 for 48 weeks of the year, children are able to attend all year around or term time only.

Eureka Nursery is a community nursery and we use this to our advantage, we use the community where we can and work alongside local schools and church to provide a variety of experiences for our children. We like to use our local area particularly with our older children to support them in learning about the world around them. We have two large outdoor areas as well as forest school on site, this promotes our ‘outdoor learning’ ethos. We believe children benefit both physically and mentally from being outdoors and this type of play is apparent throughout all our planning.

All of our rooms follow the EYFS framework and plan with individual children in mind. At Eureka we believe all children develop and learn at an individual pace and this is reflected in our room and individual planning. The areas of learning in the EYFS; Personal, Social and Emotional, Communication and Language, Physical Development, Expressive Arts and Design, Understanding the World, Mathematics, Literacy are covered across all of the rooms in nursery and are evident in their environments and their formal planning. Each child has a key person who is responsible for planning for their own children, this ensures that each child has a plan in place that is individual for their needs, learning and understanding.

Parents/carers are as important to us as the children we look after and we value them as a child’s first educator. We take pride in the relationships we build with our families and know how important it is to include parents/carers in their child’s learning. At Eureka Parents/carers are always welcome and we plan a number of events throughout the year to include them. We listen to parent/carers opinions and use this information to make our service even better.

At Eureka we believe that children learn through ‘doing’ and encourage ‘child initiated’ learning. We involve the children in the planning process and implement activities based on the interests of our children. Eureka is flexible in what we can offer and has a wide variety of resources and space to use. We are an inclusive provision and are able to welcome all children to become a part of the ‘Eureka Family’.

The nursery is split into four rooms, the children are cared for in age groups by our highly qualified staff team. All the rooms are inviting, warm, stimulating and age appropriate. Children who do a half-day session will be provided with a healthy snack, as well as this healthy snack children attending for extended hours will have a hot home cooked lunch, as well as a breakfast and cold ‘tea’ if they are in for our early/late stay provision. During our meal times our aim is to provide a ‘homely’ interactive experience. We promote independence and use these times to encourage the development of self-care skills – some of things we encourage include; having a snack bar for independent use, children serving up their own dinner, babies being encouraged to feed themselves and using child friendly jugs to encourage independent pouring.
The Baby Room (0-2yrs)
We can cater for 15 babies at any one time in our baby area, the room is cosy and inviting to the under twos. We use natural resources to encourage the babies to explore their surroundings. The furniture is low and suitable for self- selection of resources for standing babies. There is also a sleep/rest area which is relaxing and snug. The practitioners that care for the babies plan and implement a wide variety of activities for the babies to engage in these include; exploring and experimenting with messy play, creative activities and sharing stories and rhymes. Baby room has access to an enclosed, safe outdoor area which is perfect for our under two’s to go exploring in. Our baby room and the activities in the baby room are centred around providing love and care for our two’s, we like to think of ourselves as a home from home and will follow a care package based on what a child is used to at home. Our baby room practitioners are caring, nurturing and devoted. They aim to put parents at ease when they have to leave their young babies for what may be the first time.

Toddler One (2-2.5yrs)
The focus in our younger toddler room is language and the fast development of language that occurs during this time for children. The room has a relaxed feel and is an extension of the activities available in the baby room. Younger toddlers are able to get involved in a variety of planned activities, as well as make choices of what they would like to do themselves. The room is full of resources to allow different types of small world play, dressing up and make believe, singing and rhyme time and exploration of natural resources. The practitioners that work with the younger toddlers are patient, caring and understanding of the frustrations that 2 year olds may have. Toddler one share their outside space with the baby room and like babies use this daily as an extension of their indoor space.

Toddler Two (2.5yr-3yrs)
Our older toddler room has a number of resources that the older toddlers enjoy. In this room we like to get in a mess, we like to use paint and creative resources as well as explore food and other materials in messy play. We like to pretend and because of that Toddler two has a large role play area that is ever changing based on the interests of the children. Toddler two like to build so have a wide variety of blocks to build and make things with. Toddler two children are beginning to show an interest in numbers and letters so we have large colourful displays which bring print into the environment and introduces letters and numbers to the children. Our toddler two practitioners are active, they are quick on their feet and like to move around a lot – just like the children they care for.

Pre-school (3-4yrs)
Pre-school can have up to 24 children in during any one session, there room is busy, full of creations, pictures, words and noise! The room is adapted to meet the needs of the children we care for and is forever changing its look dependent on the current interest. Pre-school children learn a lot outside the room, going on trips, using forest schools or local green spaces to extend their knowledge. The room is packed with resources and the routine involves a mixture of free choice play as well as some short structured times where the children are beginning to concentrate for longer periods of time. Independence is encouraged and good behaviour is praised, pre-school practitioners are up for a challenge, fun, adaptable, firm but fair and most importantly young at heart!

The areas of learning are:

We are proud of the relationships we have with parents/carers and respect them as a child’s first educator. Parents/carers are always welcome in nursery and we have many planned events throughout the year for them to get involved in.

Eureka Discovery hut has a close relationship with local schools and our transition procedure from nursery to school is praised throughout the city. Every Child Matters

At Eureka we believe Every Child maters and we plan and implement activities, community sessions and our nursery environments with this in mind.

Being Safe
We believe all children have a right to be safe and we provide safe secure provisions, that have resources and environments that are age appropriate and meet recommended legislations and guidelines. Our staff team is fully qualified and all practitioners have the relevant checks in place and relevant up to date training – such as first aid. Practitioners provide emotional security by having caring, loving relationships with the children they look after. Parents/carers are informed of the importance we place on child safety during induction when they told about our child protection, risk assessment and health and safety policy.

Being Healthy
All of provisions emphasise the importance of healthy eating, we promote the importance of having a good diet and this is reflected in our snack and meal plans. We have trips to the dentist and have health professionals visit in nursery to promote good healthy lifestyles to the children. We work in close partnerships with the health visiting team- in particular since the introduction of the 2 year checks and share information with other professionals to allow us to get the best outcomes for our children. We not only encourage but insist on using the outdoor area daily to encourage physical play and fresh air as we know this is essential for not only a child’s physical well-being but their emotional well-being too .

Making a Positive Contribution
Eureka believes that all children have a contribution to make, We get to know our children and families on an individual level because this supports us in ensuring that all families are able to make a contribution to our organisation. We encourage children to be involved in daily activities and practitioners support them in doing this.

Achieving Economic Well Being
All children that attend any of our provisions are supported in reaching their own potential. We understand that all children are different and will learn at different paces, therefore when we carry out assessments we look at where the child was to where they are now to measure improvement. We promote children learning actively and plan activities that are fun, inviting and interesting to do this. If a child is actively involved they are more likely to learn.

Enjoy and Achieve
Eureka is all about having fun, the main priority of all our provisions is for children to enjoy their time with us and to experience different types of activities that they may not have the opportunity to experience at home. Through play children will naturally learn and this is how we encourage children’s learning.

Having Supportive Friends, Families and Communities
Eureka is at the heart of the community and because of this we rely on the support of the community to be able to carry out our provisions and activities. We involve parents across all areas of our provision and recognise them as the people that know their children the best. We rely on parents input to improve our services and listen to their needs to ensure that the provisions we are running are what is needed within the area.
Supporting British Values

Democracy; Making decisions together
This is part of the focus on self-confidence and self-awareness as cited in Personal, Social and Emotional Development .
  • Managers and practitioners will encourage the child to see their role in the bigger picture, knowing that their views count; valuing each other’s views and values and talk about their feelings. Where appropriate allow children to demonstrate democracy in action – such as what do change the home corner too (showing hands for their choice)
  • Practitioners will support the decisions that children make and provide activities that involve turn taking, sharing and collaboration. Children will be given opportunity to develop enquiring minds in an atmosphere where questions are valued.
Rule of Law
This is part of the focus on managing feelings and behaviour as cited in Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  •  Staff are to ensure that children understand their own and other’s behaviour and its consequences.
  • Children will learn to distinguish between right and wrong
  • Staff can work with children to create the rules and codes of behaviour that are to be encouraged in the setting. Involving them in the creating of ‘the nursery rules’ and helping them understand that the rules apply to everyone.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance
This is part of the focus on people and communities as cited in understanding the world and managing feelings and behaviour as cited in personal social and emotional development.
  • Managers and practitioners should create an Ethos of inclusivity and tolerance, where views, faiths, cultures and races are valued and children are encouraged to become involved with the wider community.
  • Children will acquire a tolerance and appreciation of and respect for their own and others cultures; knowing about the similarities and differences between themselves and others.
  • Practitioners will encourage and explain the importance of tolerant behaviours such as sharing and respecting other’s opinions.
  • Practitioners will promote diverse attitudes and challenge stereotypes, they will encourage the sharing of stories that reflect and value the diversity of children’s experiences and actively encourage links with home to encourage this.
Individual Liberty; Freedom For All
This is part of the focus on self-confidence and self-awareness as cited in Personal, Social and Emotional Development and people and communities as cited in Understanding the World
  • Children should develop a positive sense of themselves and practitioners can encourage this by providing opportunities that encourage children to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and confidence in their own abilities.
  • Practitioners will allow children to take risks
  • Practitioners will encourage children into a range of experiences and activities that allow them to explore their feelings and responsibilities
  • Practitioners will encourage children to take part in activities that allow them to understand that we are all free to have different opinions.
“Values do not grow by themselves – we need to shape and foster their growing beliefs. This can be instilled in a number of ways”
